A rug can have a very different construction from the fitted carpet beneath it. Wool pile, delicate fibres, colour, fringes and backing all affect the care it needs. Judge the outcome against the rug’s starting condition. Soil removal does not replace worn fibres or restore colour lost through fading. If a mark remains, ask about its cause instead of repeatedly treating it with more moisture. An old or fragile rug may need a repair or conservation decision separate from cleaning.
